Kirilenko, favorita para el Barcelona KIA'08, se confiesa desde París
Maria Kirilenko (25/01/1987, Moscú) será uno de los grandes atractivos del torneo Barcelona KIA'08 que se disputará en el David Lloyd Club Turó del 7 al 15 de junio. La joven jugadora rusa, 23ª en el Sony Ericsson WTA Tour y probable cabeza de serie número 1 en Barcelona, es una de las tenistas más carismáticas y populares del circuito. En la actualidad, Kirilenko es la imagen de la línea de ropa de la diseñadora Stella McCartney para una conocida marca deportiva y cuenta con una página Web oficial y diferentes sitios a cargo de su nutrido grupo de fans.
Desde París, Kirilenko describe sus sensaciones antes de su debut en el Grand Slam francés y de cara a su primera participación en el Barcelona KIA'08. “Las sensaciones antes de ir a Barcelona por primera vez son geniales. Estoy jugando bien y eso me da confianza”, relata.
Kirilenko revela los motivos que le han llevado a acudir a este torneo que cuenta con la consideración de Campeonatos Internacionales de Tenis Femenino de España: “Normalmente juego torneos de hierba tras Roland Garros, sin embargo esta vez he decidido jugar un torneo más sobre tierra.” Pese a que durante su emergente trayectoria como profesional, Maria Kirilenko se ha caracterizado por su especialización en pista rápida, la número 23 del mundo reconoce los beneficios de jugar sobre arcilla. “Cada vez me gusta más jugar en tierra y empiezo a hacerlo mejor. Este año he ganado mi primer torneo en esta superficie y después he seguido jugando bien. Es algo que ayuda porque siento que mejoro cada día y la tierra es la mejor superficie para aprender y conocer el juego”, explica Kirilenko.
La moscovita suma tres temporadas consecutivas finalizando entre las 30 mejores del mundo y para este año se plantea metas más altas: “El objetivo que me planteo este año es intentar acabar entre las 15 mejores del mundo y siento que tengo posibilidades reales de conseguirlo.” Kirilenko asegura que no le supone “ninguna presión” su condición de favorita en el Barcelona KIA'08, donde competirá por el título con jugadoras de entre el Top 50 mundial como Cibulkova, Safarova, Pironkova, Parmentier, Kanepi o Anabel Medina, que ganó la semana pasada en Estrasburgo y para quien Kirilenko sólo tiene palabras positivas, tanto en lo deportivo como en lo personal: “Es la mejor jugadora española de la actualidad, está realmente bien y cada vez que jugamos la una contra la otra siempre es una rival muy difícil. Además, nos entrenamos en la misma academia, en Valencia, y es una chica muy agradable.”

Maria Kirilenko (25/01/1987, Moscow) will be one of the main drawcards at the Barcelona KIA'08 tournament that will be contested at the David Lloyd Club Turó from 7 to 15 of June. The young Russian, currently 23rd on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, and likely to be top seed in Barcelona, is one of the most charismatic and popular players on the circuit. Kirilenko is currently the face of a clothing line from Stella McCartney for a well known sporting brand and has her own official website as well as various sites created by her considerable fanbase.
From París, Kirilenko described her sensations before her debut at the French Grand Slam and looking towards her first participation at Barcelona KIA'08. “My feelings before going to Barcelona for the first time are fantastic. I am playing well and that gives me confidence” she explained,
Kirilenko revealed her reasons for coming to the tournament:
“Normally I play grass tournaments after Roland Garros, however this time I have decided to play one more clay surface” Despite her emerging professional career being characterized by her specializing in playing on hard surfaces, the world number 23 recognizes the benefits of playing on clay. “Each time I play on clay I like it more, and now I am beginning to do it better. This year I have won my first tournament on this surface and afterwards I have continued playing well. It is something that helps me because I feel that I improve every day and clay is the best surface to learn on and to get to know the game.
The Moscowvite totalled three consecutive seasons finishing among the top 30 in the world and this year she sets her sights even higher. “The objective I have set myself for this year is to finish among the top 15 in the world and I feel that I have a real possibility of achieving that.” Kirilenko said that she did not fell “any pressure” from being the favourite at Barcelona KIA'08, where she will compete for the title against players ranked in the top 50 in the world, such as Cibulkova, Safarova, Pironkova, Parmentier, Kanepi or Anabel Medina, who won last week in Strassbourg, and for whom Kirilenko only has positive words, both in sport as well as personally.
“She is the current number one Spanish player and each time we play one-on-one, she is always a difficult opponent. What's more we trained at the same academy in Valencia, and she is a really nice girl.”
